Creamy cheese fondue served with heart-shaped bread dippers. This romantic and comforting appetizer is perfect for Valentine’s Day, date nights, or cozy dinner parties.
Preheat oven to 190°C / 375°F.
Slice the bread into 2–3 cm (1-inch) thick slices. Using a heart-shaped cutter, cut out bread hearts.
Arrange on a baking tray and lightly brush with olive oil if desired.
Bake for 8–10 minutes, turning once, until lightly golden and crisp on the outside but still soft inside. Set aside.
Rub the inside of a saucepan or fondue pot with the cut sides of the garlic clove, then discard garlic.
Add white wine and lemon juice to the pot. Heat gently over medium heat until warm but not boiling.
Toss grated cheeses with cornstarch.
Add cheese to the warm wine a handful at a time, stirring constantly in a figure-eight motion until fully melted and smooth before adding more.
Once all cheese is melted, stir in black pepper, nutmeg, and kirsch if using.
Reduce heat to low and keep warm.
Transfer to a fondue pot or serve directly from the saucepan.
Serve immediately with warm bread hearts for dipping.
